Where or When – Laufey

My new soprano and alto choir arrangement of “Where or When” by Laufey offers a fresh, engaging take on this contemporary jazz tune. Laufey, known for her fusion of jazz, classical, and pop influences, originally released “Where or When” as part of her rise in the modern jazz scene. This arrangement captures the song’s elegant melodies and dreamy harmonies, while making it accessible for young or beginner jazz choirs. The carefully crafted vocal parts focus on clear harmonies and smooth phrasing, allowing teenage singers to explore jazz in an approachable way, while still challenging them with its sophisticated rhythms and mood.

The song’s rich jazz history, combined with Laufey’s modern interpretation, makes it an ideal introduction to the genre for developing choirs. Originally written by Rodgers and Hart for the 1937 musical Babes in Arms, “Where or When” has been covered by countless jazz greats over the years, from Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra. By arranging this piece for soprano and alto voices, I’ve maintained its timeless charm while adapting it for younger singers, who will appreciate the smooth transitions and lyrical beauty. The arrangement balances jazz complexity with accessibility, making it perfect for students eager to explore vocal jazz.

The arrangement is available in two keys – C major (Laufey’s key) and D major. The alto range is F#3 – A4 in C major, G#3 – B4 in D major; the soprano range is A2 – D4 in C major and B2 – E4 in D major.

The D major version is below:
